Positive Intelligence and Servant Leadership: Tools for Overcoming Cancer and Career Setbacks with Kevin Gazzara

Kevin Gazzara is Dr. Brad Miller’s guest on this episode of “The Beyond Adversity Podcast.”
Kevin is the co-founder of Magna Leadership Solutions and a certified Positive Intelligence (PQ) mental fitness coach.
He brings over 30 years of corporate experience, including 18 years at Intel, where he worked in leadership development and organizational performance. Today, Kevin helps leaders build resilience, improve emotional intelligence, and overcome limiting mindsets through his coaching and consulting work.
In this episode, Kevin shares how his life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, something that runs in his family. Rather than seeing it as a setback, he approached it as an opportunity to apply the same mental fitness principles he teaches others.
He explains how mindset plays a critical role in navigating adversity. Kevin introduces the concept of “saboteurs” vs. the “sage brain,” showing how negative thought patterns can limit performance and how awareness can help you shift toward more productive thinking.
Kevin also talks about the importance of emotional intelligence not just understanding logic, but managing emotions first before making decisions. He emphasizes simple practices like breathing exercises and mindfulness to regain focus during stressful moments.
As a leadership coach, Kevin highlights how servant leadership creates long-term impact. He shares how giving value without expecting immediate returns builds stronger relationships and better outcomes in both business and life.
He also shares a real client story, where applying these principles improved leadership behavior, communication, and even personal relationships proving that mental fitness affects every area of life.
Kevin is also the co-author of books including “The Leader of Oz” and “Ready, Set, Get Hired,” where he combines practical leadership strategies with storytelling to make complex ideas easy to apply.
Kevin Gazzara’s story is a practical and insightful example of how mindset, emotional intelligence, and resilience can help you navigate adversity from career challenges to serious health diagnoses and come out stronger on the other side.
This episode of The Beyond Adversity Podcast is a must-listen for leaders, professionals, and anyone facing difficult situations who wants to build mental strength, improve decision-making, and grow through life’s challenges.

Mark, hello, good people. Welcome again to Cancer and Comedy. Today we have Kevin Gazzara joining us to talk about leadership, mindset, and overcoming adversity.
Kevin Gazzara::Brad, thanks so much for having me. I appreciate being here with your audience.
Dr. Brad Miller::You have a strong background in leadership. Can you share your journey and how your recent health challenge came into your life?
Kevin Gazzara::I spent 30 years in the corporate world, including 18 years at Intel, before starting my own leadership company.
Dr. Brad Miller::So you transitioned from corporate into consulting and leadership development.
Kevin Gazzara::Yes, and about five years ago I got into Positive Intelligence, which builds on Emotional Intelligence.
Dr. Brad Miller::Let’s talk about your health challenge and how that shifted things for you.
Kevin Gazzara::About a year ago, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It runs in my family, so I was monitoring it closely.
Kevin Gazzara::After testing and analysis, I chose radiation treatment based on the data.
Kevin Gazzara::The treatment went well, and my PSA levels are now at zero.
Dr. Brad Miller::That’s great news. How did you mentally navigate that experience?
Kevin Gazzara::I see challenges as opportunities. It’s about mindset and how you respond.
Kevin Gazzara::There are always two ways to look at a situation either as a threat or an opportunity.
Kevin Gazzara::Radiation was actually a simple process. It was quick daily sessions over several weeks.
Dr. Brad Miller::Were you able to apply your Positive Intelligence framework during this time?
Kevin Gazzara::Yes. It starts with understanding your saboteurs versus your sage mindset.
Kevin Gazzara::You have to manage your emotional brain before you can use your rational brain effectively.
Kevin Gazzara::There are simple exercises like breathing and mindfulness that help control your reactions.
Kevin Gazzara::I used to be skeptical of meditation, but the science behind it changed my perspective.
Kevin Gazzara::Breathing techniques help you stay grounded, especially in stressful moments.
Kevin Gazzara::I’ve seen clients transform using this approach, even in high-pressure leadership roles.
Dr. Brad Miller::So this improves not just leadership but overall quality of life.
Kevin Gazzara::Exactly. It also ties into servant leadership giving without expecting immediate returns.
Kevin Gazzara::The impact of helping others often comes back later, not instantly.
Dr. Brad Miller::Did your diagnosis change how you coach your clients?
Kevin Gazzara::Yes, it gave me a chance to reflect and focus more on what truly matters.
Kevin Gazzara::I also talk about these ideas in my book, The Leader of Oz.
Kevin Gazzara::We used storytelling to explain leadership concepts in a relatable way.
Kevin Gazzara::Building a balanced team is key you need different strengths working together.
Dr. Brad Miller::What advice would you give someone facing adversity right now?
Kevin Gazzara::Start by learning, stay positive, and don’t try to handle everything alone.
Kevin Gazzara::Having support or a coach makes a big difference.
Kevin Gazzara::People can reach out to me directly, and I’m happy to help without any pressure.
Dr. Brad Miller::Kevin, thank you for being here and sharing your story with us today.
